The Peer Buddy Program has been a special part of the WAJ community for many years. Middle and high school students are trained to work with elementary students who could use some extra attention and friendship. Big Buddies are paired with Little Buddies and meet once a week to play a game, talk or participate in another activity the Little Buddy enjoys. The goal of the program is to help provide support for the Little Buddy. The Big Buddy often becomes a significant person in the Little Buddy's life. The Big Buddy benefits as well from learning communication skills and the positive feelings that come with helping another person.
Students in grades 8-12 are welcome to apply to the program in the fall. Little Buddies are recommended by classroom teachers. Big Buddies should have at least one study hall a week, enjoy helping and spending time with young children and be responsible.
